8 Days to Princeton Hot Springs

7/28-  We had 2 fun and relaxing days in Frisco. Thank you Pat and Phil for letting us crash your condo.   Great to see you Miley and Fred.  Safe travels back to Long Island.

125 miles to Princeton Hot Springs, our next major layover. Our wives will be meeting us there for 2 days of R&R. I can't wait to see my wife, Brenda.

RM and I took the bus to the trailhead. 3500' elevation gain and loss today. We had a good day and covered 17.8 miles. Set up our tents in the rain.

We climbed Breckinridge Peak 2., elevation 12,400.

Fire on Peak 2 this past spring. Freaky to walk through.

Heading to summit.

At the Summit and heading to Copper Mt.

7/29-  Long day, 16 miles over  2 passes., elevation 12022. Started the day freezing cold., mid 30's. Didn't help we were soaked from last night's rain.  Luckily it was a beautiful day and we dried things out below Searle Pass.

Wind howled as we made our way through high elevation tundra.

Normally it rains every afternoon (Actually it  most often hails.) but today it only drizzled. Something to celebrate.

Seeing and hearing lots of animals: marmot, pics, coyote, mountain goat, and blue jays, grey jays and hawks. Haven't gotten any photos yet. I'm too slow or they're way off in the distance.  Amazing flowers as well. I am going to do a special post just on flowers next weekend. Brenda will be around and she can help me identify them.

Went through an old army base today, Camp Hale.  The old bomb bunkers still exist.

7/30-  Man am I pooped!  We covered 15 miles today but we tackled some serious up in the afternoon. We went from 9000' to 11,000' back to 9,000' and up to 11,000' where we ended our day. Typical morning...Green tea, cereal bars and filtering water for the day.

Our morning hike was leisurely. We made our way through a beautiful meadow, through some rolling forest, over Tennessee Pass and into the Holy Cross Wilderness. We were banging out the miles.

Then the elevation yoyo began. What a slog! But it was gorgeous and worth every step.

We finally settled by a small pond for the night. A quick meal and off to bed. Yup, bedtime is around 7:30 pm.  Night RM...

7/31-  Woke up this morning with frost on the tents.   I guess that is to be expected at 11,000'.  It was a beautiful morning though.

16+ mile day ahead of us but we are motivated!  It is resupply day and RM's wife Sharon is meeting us at the Mt. Massive trailhead w/ what else...Burgers and beer!  Another challenging day though. 2 major elevation gains and losses. The trail is steep, boney and kicked our butts.

We passed under the shadow Mt Elbert, the tallest mountain in CO. at 14,450'.

Met up with Sharon just before 6:00 pm.  A quick clean up, fresh clothes and real food!  Thank you Sharon!!

We have covered 170 miles to date. Only 315 miles to go.

I am working so hard each day to meet my challenge of hiking the CT. But that is nothing compared to a single on or Dad working multiple jobs to keep a roof over their kid's heads and pay the bills.   Sometimes this leaves the frig empty.
