(Backup) Rte 114 to Spring Creek Pass

8/11-  Blueberry pancakes for breakfast!  Thank you Jeff and Sue!  RM and I spent the morning getting our resupply in order and were able to get back on the trail around noon. This next segment is 55 miles and should take us 3.5 days.

1500' of elevation gain today so we were able to make good time.- 14.3 miles for a half day's work. Not bad!  The trail rose out of an aspen forest and into high elevation pasture. It was beautiful.

Talk about big sky country!

We hiked to 8:00 pm, set up camp, and enjoyed the sunset.

Time to crash.

8/12-  It was damp and cold this morning so we moved our gear into the sun as we prepped for the day.

We had a couple more miles walking through the grasslands before we finally re-entered the woods.

Spent most the day walking through a beautiful valley we called cow pie valley.  Lots of cattle and lots of ....watch your step!

We reached the end of the trail segment at Eddiesville Trailhead just as it started to hail, thunder and lightning. We made a hot meal and stayed dry and warm in the long drop.

The rain wouldn't quit so we hiked about 3.5 miles in the rain before settling into a very wet campsite. We probably had our coldest night of the trip so far.

The rain limited us to a 16 mile day.

8/13-   Today started out with us needing to dry out after a very wet afternoon and evening.

Wow, what a day. Over 4,000 ' elevation gain while crossing over 6 passes.  We topped out today at 12,800 feet. As you can imagine elevation loss was as substantial. Pulled into camp a little early today because of another thunderstorm.  Just spectacular views!

Getting back into the mountains.

The San Luis saddle at 12,600'.

Making our way up to the saddle.

From the top of the saddle.

Settled in at camp just before more rain.

8/14-  11 miles to our resupply today...Yes!  Had new friend Naomi from Washington state join us for breakfast and  our walk to the trailhead.

The day started with a push up to the top of Snow Mesa at 12,800'. Of course, when you go up you got to come down. In this case we came down on top of a mesa that went on for miles.

Almost home for the day but I must say this has been the most beautiful segment yet!

Naomi joined us for our day off. The ladies doing tapestry weaving under Van Gogh's awning.

Back on the trail Thursday for a 53 mile segment.  357 miles down and 128 miles to go.
